Jr. Mammoth wins tournament, earns bid to National Championship

The Jr. Mammoth Burgundy U13 team defeated 3d Select Blue, 8-5, on Sunday night at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in the championship game to win the division and cap off an undefeated weekend at the Dick’s Sporting Goods Colorado Cup lacrosse tournament.
With the victory, the program earned a bid to compete for the national championship at the Dick’s Sporting Goods Tournament of Champions presented by Pasco County.   “I had the opportunity to visit the national championship down in Wesley Chapel last winter, and what a great experience it was for my family and me,” said Mammoth president & general manager Steve Govett, who is also the head coach of the Jr. Mammoth Burgundy U13 team. “I really wanted the opportunity for the kids who play for me on the Jr. Mammoth to experience it…at Saddlebrook and in Florida…and spend the winter playing in a great tournament down there against champions from all over the country.
It just couldn’t be a better scenario for us!”   After winning a 4-3 nail-biter over CC Select Gold in its first game of the tournament on Friday evening, Jr. Mammoth Burgundy didn’t allow another goal until the quarterfinals. In total, the champions outscored their opponents, 79-15, in eight games en route to winning the 34-team division.   “The [boys] played great this week,” said Curt Breeling, manager of Jr. Mammoth Lacrosse. “It’s a real accomplishment for the team.”   The Jr. Mammoth Black U13 team also medaled, taking second place in the ‘B’ division.
